The site consisted of two Edwardian shops with two-storey flats above. The shops were to be combined together by removing the brickwork between them in the first phase of the works while the second phase saw the flats rebuilt with an extra storey at the back, made possible by reducing the ceiling heights. An interesting feature of the rebuilt flats was a circular staircase with a circular concrete light-tube above it.
